Doctor Beverly Crusher came aboard the Enterprise with her son, Wesley. Her deceased husband, Jack Crusher, died under the command of Picard, creating tension during the first season of the show between the two characters, tension that also at one time extended between Wesley and Picard. The tension between Beverly and Picard died out later, as the two had feelings for each other, which didn't develop. Wesley Crusher and Picard actually developed an immense amount of respect for each other and became quite close before Wesley left for another plane of existance.
Crusher took a leave of absence in the second season, (2365), as she became head of Starfleet medical. Gates McFadden was actually pregnant during the time. A year later, the character replaced her replacement, Dr. Katherine Pulaski.
The character's development seemed to revolve around her son, Wesley Crusher, until he left for Starfleet Academy. After which Crusher seemed to finally be able to develop her own character. She took command of the Enterprise during the invasion of Lore and his leader ship of Borg in "Descent".
She didn't have much time in the movie, Generations. McFadden and a few other of the cast members are definitely hoping for some more screen time in the new upcoming film.
And as for Wesley Crusher, ohh what can we say other than, wouldn't all mothers love a son like him! He definitely should have some roles in upcoming ST films, but there isn't anything definite yet. But trekkers want him back in a new and more mature capacity. The more I think about it the more I think Wesley needs his own page, what do you think?
